EYE

Eye injuries range from minor to severe.  A direct blow to the eye can cause damage to the skin, tissues, eyeball, and bones around the eye. 

CHEMICAL EXPOSURE AND BURNS are caused by a splash of liquid into the eye.  Soap, sunscreen, and tear gas do not usually cause permanent damage.  However battery acid and other household products can cause permanent damage. 

CORNEAL ABRASIONS are basically scratches on the eye.  The cornea is the transparent layer of skin that covers the eye.  They often result from a finger or tree branch. 

ORBITAL BLOWOUT FRACTURE is the cracking or breaking of the bone that surrounds the eye.  The most common cause is getting hit in the face with a baseball bat or getting kicked in the face.  Visual problems are usually present. 

IRITIS is inflammation of the colored portion of the eye.  This usually results from a blow to the eye by a fist or a club. 

ULTRAVIOLET KERATITIS is the most common light induced trauma to the eye.  These can be found in welders and in people that overuse tanning beds.
